Our experts are now adding how to pack shoes for a move to the list. We have found that in order to keep your shoes clean and protected during the moving process, it is best to follow these simple tips for packing shoes.

Best Ways to Move Shoes

Our Arizona Moving company has put together a guide to follow when starting to pack shoes for moving.

Step 1: Clean Out the Closet

One of the first steps in any moving process is to first clean things out. Go through your shoes and see what you can donate or get rid of. It makes the packing and unpacking process a lot easier for the movers and for you.

Step 2: Organize What Shoes Are Left

Once you have chosen which pairs you are keeping and which you are taking with you, it is time to organize them. You can sort them by style:

  • Sandals
  • Dress shoes
  • Heels
  • Running shoes
  • Golf shoes
  • Boots
  • Slipper
  • Seasonal footwear

This will again help to make packing, moving, and unpacking easier. By having them sorted, you will know where to put what shoes and how to unpack them accordingly.

Step 3: Clean Dirty Shoes

A step to take before packing the shoes is to make sure they are all clean. You don’t want to worry about one dirty pair getting all the others just as dirty from being packed in the same box. It is almost important to remember to make sure the shoes are completely dry before packing them.

Here are 6 easy steps to clean footwear:

  1. Use a dry brush – You can remove loose dirt from the outsole, midsole, and uppers with a soft-bristled brush.
  2. Use a mild cleaning solution – Mix warm water with a small amount of mild laundry detergent or dish soap. For white or light-colored shoes, you can mix equal parts baking soda and water.
  3. Hand-wash the laces – Remove the laces from the shoes and wash them in a mild cleaning solution, then dab them with a soft cloth and lay or hang them to dry.
  4. Wash soles – Apply a cleaning solution to a soft-bristled brush or washcloth. Use it to clean the outsoles and midsoles thoroughly.
  5. Wash and blot uppers – Use the same cleaning solution on a cloth, soft-bristled brush, or toothbrush to clean the uppers. Don’t scrub too hard, and take your time.
  6. Air dry – Leave them out at room temperature. Make sure they are completely dry before wearing them or packing them. It could take up to 8 hours or more for them to fully dry.

Step 4: Pack Shoes Securely

It is important to pack the shoes in pairs to avoid the risk of shoes getting lost. To keep them together, keep the laces of one shoe tied to the other shoe and pack them together in small bags or boxes.

For the shoes that need the most protection, consider packing them in the original boxes they came in if you still have them, or place them in a small moving box. Another way to keep them safe is to stuff them with socks or packing paper to avoid the shoes getting damaged or losing their shape.

Step 5: Label the Boxes

Once the shoes are organized, cleaned, packed, and ready to go, there is one more step in how to pick shoes for moving that will help. Label the boxes! This will help movers know where to put the boxes and help you know where everything is when you start to unpack. An inventory list can be created to help you stay organized and keep track of everything packed.
